Frequently Asked Questions
1. How affordable is travel in Alaska?
It really depends….if you’re on a tight budget, camping is a great option. In addition to campgrounds in all the major cities and towns, numerous federal and State campgrounds dot the landscape.
2. Is the wildlife dangerous?
Bears and moose can be dangerous, particularly when mothers are raising little ones or when you surprise one. The terrific news is that there are ZERO snakes, very few spiders, and no ticks. Watch out for mosquitos!
3. Have you ever been in danger?
I have had a few exciting moments on occasion. Couple of close moose encounters, some tense moments near mother bears and cubs, paddling on some rivers slightly above my comfort level, and the like.
4. When is the best time to visit?
It really depends on what you want to see and do. Want to ski at Alyeska Resort…..come in February as the days are beginning to get longer and yo can maximize your time on the slopes. Want to go on bear viewing trips…….come June-August when the tours are mostly centered around visiting salmon runs on remote streams. Want to see the aurora borealis…..come in December or January when the long, dark nights increase your chances of seeing the northern lights. Overall, most people visit in the summer to maximize opportunities for wildlife viewing, fishing, and warm weather scenic touring.
